an anonymous compilation comprising 27 military cartes including 13 generals and a composite, 9 identified officers and 2 identified enlisted men, with 2 additional views of unknown enlisted men among 10 assorted civilians. There are three casualties and at least two exemplary photographs of Massachusetts officers. The owner of the album clearly had a fondness for McClellan as it contains 4 different poses of “Little Mac” including views by “Addis” and “Gutekunst.” Other generals present are McDowell, Silas Casey (damaged), Rosecrans, a pair of Grant lithographs, an early Brady portrait of Hooker as brigadier, the obligatory Winfield Scott, an engraving of Lander, plus the less common uniformed view of General Charles F. Smith (unfortunately damaged) as colonel of the 3rd US Infantry. The composite is an 1864 representation of the “Army of the West” with thumbnails of Thomas, Schofield, Slocum, Sherman, McPherson, Howard, and Rousseau. The line officers and enlisted men in order of their appearance are: Lt. Colonel Eben P. Stanwood, 48th Massachusetts (m/o 9/3/63), Capt. Charles H. Potter, Co. D., 39th Mass. (m/o 6/2/65), unidentified private, an unsigned carte, tentatively Capt. Albert A Davis, Co. C., 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery (wounded 5/19/64 Spotsylvania, DOW 6/16/64), identified by an accompanying photocopied view (included) from another 1st Mass. Heavy album, 2nd Lieut. Jonathan A. Kenny, Massachusetts Salem Cadets, (m/o 10/11/62), Cpl. John H. Decker, Co. D., 1st Battalion Mass. Heavy Artillery (m/o 9/12/65), Pvt. Jeremiah Poland, Co. A., 1st Mass. Heavy (wounded 5/19/64 Spotsylvania, DOW 5/21/64), 1st Lieut. Geo. F. Perkins, Co. D., 1st Mass Heavy (resigned & discharged for disability 10/24/64), Capt. James C. White, 44th Mass. & Co. A., 2nd Mass. Heavy Artillery (m/o 9/3/65), unidentified private, Asst. Surgeon William F. Cornick, USA Medical Staff (resigned 10/9/65). An outstanding animated view tentatively identified as 2nd Lieut. Frank B. Chapin, Co. H, 1st Mass. Heavy wearing non-regulation officer’s sack coat and baggy velvet-like trousers while reading a letter (wounded 6/18/64 Petersburg, discharged for wounds 9/17/64). Chapin is identified by an accompanying photocopied view from another 1st Mass. Heavy album. Finally, another extraordinary photograph by “J.W. Black, Boston” depicting the twice wounded Capt. George J. Thompson, 24th Mass. & Co. B., 2nd Mass. Thompson was wounded at Chancellorsville and later at Atlanta, finally mustering out 7/14/65. He wears an unusual frock coat with fold-over velvet collar, lieutenants straps with the rank pip fixed vertically, kid leather gloves and large embroidered national shield on his kepi. Affixed to the velvet collar is a flower (in winter?) endearment. The last two noteworthy photographs are worth the price of the entire album!
