GERMAN MODEL 1898/ PERUVIAN MODEL 1909 LONG MAUSER BAYONET In 1898 the Germans adopted the long Model 1898 bayonet with a 20 rib-back blade. Peru obtained a number of these about 1909, identical to the German Model 1898 with two piece grips and no flash guard, but with their crest stamped on the base of the pommel and no German inspector marks on the blade. Ricasso is signed Simson & Co., Suhl. One of the only bayonets of this era that was exported in basically the same form as the German issue. Though I have seen some nice examples on eBay lately, this is definately an uncommon bayonet. Condition is excellent throughout with a very pleasing aged patina on the metal parts. Age darkening and staining, whatever you want to call it. Some areas with very light surface rust. Overall surface is smooth. Un-cleaned condition. Some extra-fine steel wool would yield a "brighter cleaner" finish. Scabard is excellent. Does not feel flimsy or like it is about to crumble. Tight, fresh stitching. This piece does not have that factory fresh glow that some 1909s have but is in otherwise superb condition. This is a tier one piece in excellent condition. No defects or weaknesses. The patina could displease those who require the fresh off the assembly line look but this is really the look that I was after as a collector. Not worn or damaged but with read more
