Series; 100 Aspects of the Moon

Yoshitoshi- Yoshitoshi was the most influential artist of Meiji era Japan. His prints shimmer with energy and bring to life the tales of ancient Japan. Tragic love stories, the downfall of the once mighty, untouchable beauty, military conquests, and slices of everyday life. The stories go on and on. Yoshitoshi had the heart of a storyteller, spinning his tales and twisting the outcome to suit his art. He also had the immense talent of a woodblock master, bringing emotion and elegance to an image on paper.

An Especially Fine 100 Aspects of the Moon collection- This print is from a fantastic set of Yoshitoshi Moon prints being offered in our auctions this evening. The prints are all from the same original release and are fine, first edition impressions from the series. In person and in our photos you will notice the sharp, excellent detail. Also, many of the prints have fine, crisp wood grain from the printing blocks- another indication of the early release. Later prints often do not show any grain or have "muddy" graining as the blocks were worn and ink saturated. Additionally, note the full original margins. The prints are not trimmed at all. Finally, the prints have no album backing as was common in this series, another great feature of these prints. The prints are very consistent and all of the ones offered tonight have the elements noted above (except wood grain that simply varies depending on the nature of the original wood used. These are beautiful early prints with the printing elements our clients look for. Some of the prints do have a bit of staining and any issues will be mentioned with each condition report. Comments- Each New Year, the emperor's goodwill envoy was sent to the shogun's castle in Edo . For entertainment, the ruling family always arranged for a great Noh performance. The invited wealthy townspeople would gather at the castle gates at dawn to ensure good seating. In this fantastic design, a samurai stands stiffly viewing the crowd run by. His self-contained dignity contrasts with the liveliness of the crowd. Wonderful image from old Edo and beautiful Yoshitoshi 100 Moon print.

Condition- With excellent original color from the first printing and very fine detail as shown. This print is not backed. Not trimmed- a full original sheet. Slight pink in offsetting from storage in lower left (see photo). Beautiful wood grain in background.
