Monogram released this kit of the guided missile cruiserU.S.S. Columbus back in 1976, about when I bought it new. The Columbus was an interesting ship, originally a Baltimore -class heavy cruiser that reached the Pacific theater just as World War 2 ended. It survived the scrapping of many of that era’s ships and underwent a major refitting in the 1960s to become transformed as an Albany -class guided missile cruiser. Its most notable physical feature is the huge superstructure that was necessary to accommodate all of the radar and electronics required for this new type of modern sea warfare. Much of the structure was made of aluminum in order to save weight and avoid top heaviness. I did open the parts bag back then, so I’ve gone through them now and compared them to the instructions to ensure the kit’s complete. The only flaws I see are some light box wear and depression, a little flaking on part of the decals, and some insect damage to the instructions. The extent of any of this is visible in the photos and should detract little from the kit builder’s enjoyment. I have also included a Sea Classics magazine article from the 1980s about the ship. I combine shipping costs for multiple purchases and only charge actual postage fees (i.e. no hidden handling charges). International buyers are responsible for any customs charges or import read more
