Over the next few weeks we will be listing hundreds of model kits (we stopped counting at 400) from this major estate find. There are plastic model plane kits, control line and freeflight balsa plane kits, boats including three different Chris-Craft kits, plastic car kits and others. The dates of the kits range from the 1940s to the early 1990s. The manufacturers include: Sterling, Guillows, Aristo-Craft, Comet, Berkeley, Dumas, Jetco, Dave Platt, Monogram, Aurora, Revell, Hawk, Williams Bros., AMT and the list goes on! Most of these kits have never been started, in fact most have never been taken out of the original boxes! There are very rare kits that will be listed in these upcoming auctions. If you collect or built any type of model you should watch our auctions for the next three weeks! That said, here we go. Very rare, original PT-17 Boeing Kaydet Primary Trainer, this is the "Yellow Peril" balsa model plane kit. This kit is no. G5, manufactured by Monogram, it is dated 1957. It is marked as an exact scale model. The first trainer standardized for the Air Force and Navy. Rubber-powered wooden scale flying model kit. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufactures sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufactures launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started but the balsa pieces were removed from the balsa sheets. I placed them back into their place for the photos and to show the kit was complete. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Bright, vivid colors on the box, one broken seam. Great addition to any collection!
