I am selling this (and another similar piece) for a friend and I will do my best to explain them. This is an original Native American portrait by Montana artist Gary Schildt. It was purchased at an art show or gallery in Helena, Montana in the early to mid-1960s and has been owned by the same family until now. It is dated "63" below the signature which I assume to be 1963. The medium is chalk or pastel. I have taken a number of photos of the artwork and signature. The signature is somewhat different from Gary's later signature but there are lots of similarities in the style of the artwork and signature to his later works. Like I said, I beleive this to be a Gary Schildt piece but am open to suggestions. It is a portrait of male Native American, presumably a Blackfoot Indian. Gary is well know for his depictions of the Blackfeet. This would be some of his early work. This was done on a piece of cardboard (appears to have been the backside of department store box, indicative of an early struggling artist). The picture size is 9" x 12" and the frame size is 14" x 17". It is mounted behind glass and was somewhat difficult to photograph without glare. Photos were taken at a number of different angles to accurately depict the piece. Several photos were taken of the piece after it was removed from the frame.
