__________________ This is a vintage early MONTANA statehood-era mining company letter. The letter was from Elkhorn, Montana, which is located in Jefferson County about 18 miles from the county seat of Boulder by road but only about nine miles by overland hike. Elkhorn had a post office in operation from 1884 until 1824. There are still a few year-round residents in Elkhorn, and others have cabins for vacation use. Elkhorn is considered one of the "must-see ghost towns" in Montana, even though it is not quite a ghost town. The letterhead heading states "THE NEW ELKHORN MINING COMPANY - ELKHORN, JEFFERSON COUNTY, MONTANA.". This letter was sent to D. P. Patenaude, manager of A. M. Holter Hardware of Helena, Montana. It is headed "June 9th, 1897". Included is a complaint about a roaster stack obtained from Holter Hardware that "it a very inferior piece of work. The letter goes on to describe in some detail the problems that Manager Kelly had with the roaster stack, and requests that Patenaude visit for an inspection. The letter continues "Take the 9;30 A. M. train on the Great Northern Ry., any morning, and the write will meet you at the station at Boulder with his team."
