Up for auction is this fun, vintage Monterey Furniture dresser, circa 1938, all original and in good condition, with the Monterey name and horseshoe. Rich Desert Dust finish (an antiqued, light tan color). Interest in Monterey Furniture has skyrocketed since it was featured in an exhibit at the California Heritage Museum accompanied by the publication in 2000 of the book Monterey: Furnishings of California's Spanish Revival by Roger Renick & Michael Trotter. The Monterey line is highly coveted by collectors today. ABOUT MONTEREY FURNITURE: Monterey furniture was produced in Los Angeles , California for only 14 years, from 1929 to 1943, by Mason Manufacturing Company. T was a renewed interest in Spanish revival architecture and furniture following the Panama-California International Exposition held in California in 1915. The California Spanish Revival movement reached its peak in the 1920âe(tm)s and early 1930âe(tm)s. Its initial influences are strongly rooted in 16th & 17th Spanish and the early California mission era furniture design. The Monterey Furniture line was instantly popular and fashionable estates filled their homes with the unique forms that were sold through Barker Brothers Furniture stores. Will Rogers , Clark Gable, Bela Lugosi, Gene Autry, Walt Disney and William Randolph Hearst were just a few of the many celebrities who owned collections of Monterey Furniture. Complex old wood and painted finishes on distressed lumber with wrought iron hardware were indicative of the Monterey look. A full line of furniture and accessories were produced. Signed Monterey Dresser: This dresser has four drawers. Desert Dust finish. T is painted decoration with a Mexican theme on the top drawer, as pictured below. That top drawer shows evidence of having been broken at some time. It has an old but solid repair, but could use some inpainting, as pictured below. It is branded on the back with the horseshoe mark and " Monterey ." This sturdy dresser has the typical Monterey details like original iron hardware and knocked-down edges. It measures approximately 36.5âe wide by 18âe deep by 34.5âe high. Like on most vintage Monterey pieces, t is light finish wear to the top. The sides look good overall with light wear and a minor mark or t It is heavy. Good condition overall.
