This pair of Corinthian column candlesticks is spectacular. They are covered in ornament, retain their original polychrome finish and are in excellent condition. From the top down, Corinthian capitals composed of acanthus foliage, figural decoration to the upper shaft composed of two pairs of cherubs, one reaching for a floral swag, the second pair reaching for fruit, these cherubs flank two winged figures that appear to represent good and evil, the female form as good, the male as evil. T is an encircling band with lion masks, floral swags descend from these over the fluted lower half of the shafts. The bases are square and have a repeating pattern of "C" scrolls. I am attributing this pair to the Roman Bronze Co., of New York City. I have had marked examples of their work in the past, these though un-marked, are their work. The attention to detail, the method of construction (copper sheet over composition) and the color scheme of turquoise and a reddish orange are identical to those other marked pairs. These would have been made between 1915 and 1920. They are in excellent, original condition. They stand 16 1/2' tall and the bases are 5 1/4" square. The candle cups are 1 1/2" in diameter, the candles shown are included. I had the evil idea of converting these into lamps, the cores are solid and t are support wires in the center so drilling is out of the question, a weighted base cap could be used to support a socket and shade, the electric wire would then run down the back. T is really no need to tamper with these, they are wonderful as they stand. Bid with confidence, you will not be disappointed. Questions are encouraged.
