This thing is really MASSIVE. Certainly the largest one I've ever had. Tips my bathroom scale at 15 pounds. Measures 31 inches handle to handle, and 18 inches wide. The entire surface of the center platform is heavily chased, excellent work, and deeply cut. At the center is the sterling insert with a coat of arms. The very top of the picture of this coat of arms has been cut off, but should show a curved sword in the clenched hand at the very top. Audaciter is inscribed as the motto, and from the research that I was able to find translates as "boldly". Further research indicates that this was the family motto for the Ewing family. I peg the date at or around 1810. Additionally, the feet are exceptionally well formed and in high relief, as are the handles and the outer rim. All in all, an excellent piece of craftsmanship. Marked only with an "S", on the underside of the rim near each handle. The condition is very nice. The only wear through of the silver sheath is at the high edges of the ogee inner rim, and a few scattered points of the rim. I consider this to be surprising, and very presentable as-is. The lower left photo shows a copper color that is the reflection of my hand, NOT wear through, t is nothing like that anyw I have only lightly polished this piece, leaving any additional work to you. I prefer the contrasting dark areas in the crevices. It polished rather easily. The center sterling insert onto which the coat of arms has been engraved is slightly off-kilter. The arms crest itself is straight, but the square center insert is tipped to the left, see photo. Additionally, one of the handles became detatched at one point, and was soldered back on. Not a bad repair, but the old lead solder could have been cleaned up better leaving a more refined seam, see photo. The handle is solidly attatched however and a jeweller should be able to clean it up nicely should you want it done. The only other thing that I can think to diminish its wonderfulness is a slight sag at the center, mostly at the side toward the bottom of the coat of arms, and that, barely noticable. This tray would hold up to any tea service, no matter the weight. It is hefty and substantial, and as such deserves an extra look-see. Pay by Paypal, cashier's check personal check, or wire transfer. I can have this packed by Mail Boxes Etc. in Long Beach, they do excellent work at a reasonable cost. I'll ship it at cost. I'll guess 20 pounds packed, but I won't know the end cost as it depends on w it's going, what it sold for (insurance is required), and who you have ship it. I prefer priority mail, but whatever. At cost. No refunds, no returns, secret reserves, and as always, be fun!
