While Hokusai and Hiroshige dominated the landscape print field, artists like Kuniyoshi, Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Kunichika and others were in the forefront of the figural print genre. These stunning prints from the kabuki, daily life, portraits of courtesans and samurai and famous scenes of Japan were hugely popular. Comments- Fine, original Yoshitoshi depiction of Zi Lou, a disciple of Confucius. Zi Lou was one of China's Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. Born from a poor family and self-educated, Zi Lou carried large bags over long distances to his parents, securing his status as a paragon of filial piety. he is shown reading and carrying a sack of rice for his parents. Beautiful print with soft color and exquisite detail. Signed- Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)Image size- 8 3/4" x 13" Condition- Good color and detail in this old print. No holes, tears, or repairs to report. Slightly toned, as shown (see photo). Nice embossing on the man's knapsack and in the cartouche in the upper right. This print has been trimmed to the subject with the narrow piece of paper added along the edge for framing.
