This is for a very early travelling mechanical propelling pencil and Bramah dip pen that dates to 1828. It is marked 'SM:GR' for Sampson Mordan & Gabriel Riddle and it also carries a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks for that year. It is also marked 'S.Mordan & Co's Patent' which is the earliest mark for Mordan Pencils. It has a slide out Bramah nib holder which is hinged and clamped shut with a ring slider. The pencil slides out independently on the sliding ring and works in the usual way, to propel the lead you turn the nozzle. The pen extends out the same way from the other end. It is in good condition for its rarity and age, it shows some general wear but everything is fully working and there are no splits or cracks in the body, there are no holes or repairs, there are some dings along the main body and wear to the sliders, and the hallmarks are not as clear as they were, but just the usual general wear you would expect from use.... overall it was a well made pen and it was made to last... and it has done just that. It measures 100mm (4") long when closed.
