Kachina dolls are a form of religious folk art attributed mostly to the Hopi. The dolls are wooden images which represent the men who dance in costume, mask and paint as kachina spirits in Hopi villages from 21st December (winter solstice) through the third week in July. A Kachina is any of numerous deified ancestral spirits of the Pueblo peoples, believed to reside in the pueblo for part of the year. Also a masked dancer believed to embody a particular spirit during a religious ceremony. And finally, a Kachina can be a carved doll in the costume of a particular spirit, usually presented as gifts to children. These larger sized Kachina measures approximately ten to twelve inches tall. Hand carved and crafted by Zuni artisan. Morning Singer : Represents early morning or dawn...because he appears on roof tops at dawn and announces news and sings songs to wake the village.
