Some time back I got on an Arts & Crafts kick, buying up anything and everything I thought would look great in the “all A&C” room filled with fine oak furniture of the period. That’s when I found out I couldn’t afford it. So I am – selling the things I had put away for when that day would come. This weaving is from sometime around 1940-1950 I think, but the mellow red ground and the geometric patterns would still look fantastic with a pair Stickley chairs. It measures 74” by 48” and is about the same weight and thickness as good hand woven rugs from the American Southwest. If some of my images appear “orangish or fire engine red,” ignore them. It is a mellow red with subtle dye changes – Plus – many design elements are both woven in and embroidered. Those measurements I gave you do NOT include the 6” fringe on one end. It would make a terrific wall-hanger. One thing that struck me about the piece as I was doing a little homework is that several of the embroidered designs can be traced to traditional Berber designs. That cross is seen in Maghreb silver. It was supposed to cast the “evil eye” to the four corners of the winds – or something like that. And the triangles? They are usually fertility symbols, so you may want to put this rug down in from of your fireplace this winter. You never know when that special “he or she” might show up and drink too much wine. (I guess it could be love, but let’s not get all idealistic. I guess I shouldn’t have made all those sexual comments, but I got caught up in the moment. I had a flashback to a crisp fall evening back the 60s. A bunch of us had built a huge bonfire way out in the middle of a densely wooded area in southern Indiana. The evening kept getting “friendlier and friendlier” if you knowwhatImean. Sometime around midnight, the entire congregation was buck nekked, rolling around on a couple old quilts someone had brought along. It prompted a friend of mine to make the observation that the only way to tell how many people were in on this “cluster of love” was to count the feet and divide by two. Oops. That flashback went on entirely too long. Sorry. It’ll never happen again. Just one more little thing about that bonfire event: A few days later I was loading hay on a wagon with a friend of mine. Out of the blue, he asked: “Who was that guy at the bonfire the other night?” “Which guy?” I asked. “You know the one,” he said. “That big guy.” “Oh yeah. I know who you’re talking about – the little blonde haired feller. I don’t know. I’d never seen him before. Hope I never do.
