2011 UK Royal Mail 'The 150th Anniversary Of The Foundation Of Morris & Company' Fully Illustrated Six Mint Stamps Presentation Pack.Issued on 5th May 2011. This latest UK Royal Mail issue of six special stamps has been produced to mark the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Morris & Company. The company was founded in 1861 by thr Pre-Raphaelite artist & designer William Morris, together with Pre-Raphaelite partners Edward Burne-Jones & Dante Gabriel Rossi, the architect Philip Web, artist Ford Madox Brown, his associate Peter Paul Marshall & Burne-Jones's Oxford friend, Charles Faulkner. The Stamps depict images of some of the works of Morris & Company as follows:- 1st Class – ‘Cray’ by William Morris 1884. The most complex Morris & Company fabric print requiring 34 individual hand printing blocks. 1st Class – ‘Cherries’ by Philip Webb 1867. This detail from a panel designed by Philip Webb can be seen in the Morris & Company designed dining room (now known as the Morris Room) at the Victoria and Albert Museum. 76p – ‘Seaweed’ by John Henry Dearle 1901. Dearle started with Morris & Company as a shop assistant in their Oxford Street showroom, by 1890 he was chief designer and on Morris’s death in 1896 art director. This wallpaper design shows the distinctive Turkish and Persian influences he brought to the firm’s designs. read more
