Up for your viewing and bidding pleasure is big, old, hard to find Great Dane figurine that needs rescuing and TLC. 200 plus animal figurines were made by the Mortens Studio, Chicago, IL. from 1931 until the 1950s and are now hard to come by. Their animal figurines were made of metal skeletons covered by a hydrostone body, so they are quite heavy for their size. The finish is rather delicate and they are prone to crazing, chipping, flaking and breakage. This old dog is no different, as he has an evident glaze crack in three of his legs, his tail and his neck, chips off the tips of his ears and a flake to the side of his nose. The body material appears to be sturdy and strong. He still has his original Mortens Studio label. Despite his failing years, this poor fellow still needs a home w he is loved and appreciated for his craftsmanship, detail, stature and rarity. They don't call them GREAT Danes for nothin'. FYI: Oscar Mortens was a Swede who emigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and at the Berlin Academy of Art. Mortens lived in Arizona at least part of the time the company was active and modeled the figures while Gunnar Thelin applied the baked on glazes.
