The Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Description Prepared for Inspection Trip of Delegates to 6th International Road Congress October 8, 1930 with Maps and Diagrams This booklet was prepared by the Bureau of Public Roads of the Department of Agriculture. It contains the History, Design and Progress in Construction of The Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in Northern Virginia. The conception of a highway to Mount Vernon as a memorial to George Washington originated in 1886. The historical section mentions the places of historic interest on the highway's route. The progress of construction is outlined and features of the road's design are discussed. The major portion of the booklet is filled with sketches, grading plans, aerial and model photographs, a detail of the parking area at Mount Vernon and Architectural elevations of some of the bridges and overpasses. There is also a folded map of the whole route. This booklet will be of interest to historians of Alexandria, VA, Public Roads, and American history. It is in excellent, condition for its age. There is some very light wear at the edges, age related discoloration and smudges on the cover. The binding is tight and there are no rips or tears.
