San Damiano Cross blessed and signed by TheMountain friars Donated by a friend of the Mountain and the Franciscan Monastery Gift Shop of Kennebunk, Maine This beautiful San Damiano (or Franciscan) Cross was acquired at the Lithuanian Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk, Maine. The cross is 15” x 11” and has been blessed and signed by the friars at Mt. Irenaeus. This style of cross, prevalent throughout Mt. Irenaeus, is one St. Francis was praying before when he received the commission from the Lord to rebuild the Church. The original cross hangs in the Basilica di Santa Chiara (Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi , Italy ). Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God . The cross is sometimes called an icon cross because besides the main figure it contains images of other saints and people related to the happening of Christ's crucifixion .
