This auction is for an amazing handmade original: North Carolina "Mountain Man Pottery" Face Jug Attributed to the Long brothers of Deep Gap, NC (Willie Long is posted in the b/w picture). The jug is wheel turned; hand altered, has porcelain eyes, recycled china teeth and is sculpted from NC stoneware clay . It is 10.5 inches tall 5.5 inches wide at base The spout has an outside diameter of 1.5 inches. The glaze is dark brown at the top spout area w/ a rusty/bronze below that. Darker tones in recessed areas...eyes...chin...indentations...with the light natural clay showing through on face. The eyes are porcelain with deep brown irises. Face jug is in MINT Condition...NO Chips!!!...NO Cracks!!!...NO Repairs!!! The bright white spots are camera flash spots...sorry about the amateur pictures. Mountain Man Pottery: Potter's Willie and Ben Long Willie Long was born 1949 in Deep Gap, Watauga County, NC in the Appalachian Mountains. He is kin to legendary banjo/guitar player Doc Watson whom, also, was born in Deep Gap, where he still makes his home. Willie graduated from the eighth grade at Parkway School. After graduation, he planned on continuing his education in the County Seat of Boone but it was too far to walk. Like most mountain dwellers in Western North Carolina his family was extremely poor. His family’s only transportation was a one and a half ton 1924 International Harvester and it was needed on the farm to run the sawmill. Turning pottery was the family’s winter business. They dug clay during the summer’s months from the Elk Creek basin and aged it over winter. Willie and his father could turn out pickling crocks faster than Willie’s younger brother Ben could form the clay balls for them to throw on their Hit and Miss Engine powered pottery wheels. Willie’s father fell ill and pasted; consequently, Willie played a vital part in keeping the farm running. His day started at 4:30am… dressing and going to the barn for morning milking of his small herd of sheep, goats and a family cow. August thru February he worked the second shift at Watauga Kraut Co. until it’s closing in the 80’s. Inspired by the excitement of kiln openings. Willie has returned to using old-time methods of making his own pottery with his brother Ben. They still maintain the farm together raising rabbits, chickens, sheep, goats, making cheese and growing burley tobacco, cabbage and Christmas trees living practically of the grid….true Mountain Men!
