An incredibly poignant 4 page letter from a young northern man (apparently the brother of Major Doran) to a family friend from the south concerning the death of his brother. It begins; “ Dear Madam, Owing to the illness of my mother who is quite unwell, Caused by the excitement & Expshur(?) of attending the funeral of the late Major Doran I take the Liberty to wright you………. Our first news of my Brother Was in the Herald Was Reported killd left on the field-fell in to the Hand of the Enemy_Same morning April 4 th Rec telegraph from Col. Bradly Who is at City Point (Grant’s Headquarters by Appomattox) as follow Major Doran is Very Badly Wounded is herenin Hospital you had best come at once….Left next day-Washington for City Point… Col. Badly Sent Me Up to Camp in His Carriage.
