Victorian Childs Cobalt Blue Aesthetic TransferwarePlate PUNCH & JUDY c 1890 This fanciful child's transferware plate dates to c.1890-1900. Originally part of a complete children's tea set, the plate measures 5 3/4" in diameter. The color is a rich cobalt blue. The plate features the storied characters from the Pulcinella puppet show dating back to Italy in the early 17th century. Punch, Judy and baby, and a fanciful pipe-smoking frog are amusing characters surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. Punch is a clown like wizard, a likable bad guy. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as in Gifts for Good Children (Volume 2) written by Maureen Batkin and published by Richard Dennis . The pattern name is "Punch". It strongly resembles plates made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-to-late 19th century, known for his whimsical children's teasets. However, this particular plate was made by another company, most likely in France, during the same period. The plate is marked only with an impressed L 5 and pattern name.
