(in circle slug plate) THIS BOTTLE NOT TO BE SOLD (on lower front) O.D. on bottom.....Hand blown....hand tooled Hutch blob collar....dark amethyst purple color.....6 1/2"tall....It has a chip off the very bottom and a tiny shallow flake on lip; no other chips or damage. Shiny clean. You have just got to see this amazing purple color to appreciate it. Just a magnificent window bottle. The beautiful amethyst or purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizer to turn the glass clear. Most of the manganese used in glass factories came from Germany, so when WW1 broke out in 1914, it became much harder to obtain manganese. Other oxide decolorizers were then used instead, so most bottles made after 1918 or so don't turn amethyst. Glass that contains manganese, when exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, causes the glass to turn amethyst. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a box...and some have been purpled by a process called "irradiation", which is a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as many years of exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster.
