Mt. TACOMA ( Mt. RAINIER )-- WASHINGTON ,1907 WATERCOLOR, ARTIST: HENNEKE (1868 -1958)

Watercolor Painting: 7" x 15"

Frame: 13 1/4" x 21 1/4"

A striking, Mt. Tacoma ( Mt. Rainier ) under-glass, matted watercolor by then Los Angeles-based painter, Anna D. Henneke. Painted in December, 1907, this is one of the most beautiful early views of this impressive mountain. Looming large over the Puyallup Valley , early Native Americans called this volcano " Tacoma "--Although it wasn't until the 1890s when the name officially became Mt. Rainier , many locals throughout the turn of the century continued to call it by its ancient name.

The watercolor is in excellent condition--no doubt due to its framing under glass. NO foxing, stains or any cuts, ripples mar this exquisite painting. The view is from a lake fronted by a barn and church. A sail boat adds perspective as does a water-entry fence.

Traveling from her southern California home, Cincinnati-born Henneke worked up and down the coast painting impressive, on-the-spot landscape images for the local market.

I acquired this serene image from a private estate sale in eastern Seattle .
