Probably one of the rarest and most desirable items of Victorian art glass in North America and even world wide is the highly sought after and prized 'Burmese' glass produced by Webb/ Mt Washington during the Victorian era. Circa 1870 this fine tooth pick holder is a perfect example of this amazing glass. Many have attemted to reproduce it such as Fenton and others but if you have ever held the real thing in your hand you would instantly know the difference. Difficult to describe it feels soft and fuzzy with no roughness whatsoever like a new born babies skin. The process included using pure gold and an iridium substance ( don't worry it's not toxic at all and is still used today) but under a black light it glows a green iridesence. Only the real thing will do this. It truly has a most unusual look , almost other worldly that folks have treasured since the nineteenth century until now. It has a peachy, lemon custard look as it changes shades to a high peach in the middle and keeping the yellow at the top and bottom as when this concoction was in the fires as heated glass.it changed. This is due to what was called 'gold salts' that caused these colors to naturally happen and when light passes through it is soft , colorful, soothing and pretty. Because of this a tiny little lamp was made from Burmese at Webb and were called ' Fairy Lamps' These were very popular in Victorian times and might sit on a ladies dressing table or anyw but the effect even today cannot be reproduced but only mildly imitated. Probably a very experienced collector will buy this and put it proudly in their collection but because it's small and a toothpick holder it is a chance for the beginner to own the real thing . I am presenting the basics so perhaps a Fenton collector or just someone who is starting out may have a chance to own real art glass. You're talking high hundreds to thousands when you talk Burmese but this toothpick holder might be affordable so don't be afraid to try to win it. Dimensions & description - Two inches high with an expansion to 2 1/2 in the middle . Melon ribbed , hand decorated with a petite floral moss green and white hand painted design with no loss . Polished pontil. T is a very tiny manufacturing dip on the lip , this is not a chip by any stretch of the imagination and I am just mentioning this for detail and do gurantee this and that it is authentic Burmese glass from the era as stated. Good luck and treat yourself ! Ships most worlwide from US 37918
