All parts are present and fully functional. The center beam flat car was first introduced in the late 1960’s. But in the mid-1970s the center beam flatcar found its true calling: as the vehicle of choice for the lumber industry, delivering dimensional lumber and sheets of plywood, particle board, and other building products. Advances in packaging made it possible to ship wood products in plastic-wrapped packages protected from the elements. This enabled the open center beam flat car, which was easier to load and unload. It replaced the all-door boxcar as the continent’s lumber carrier. This RailKing model is based on the Thrall 63’ “opera window” center beams built for the lumber industry in the mid-1970s and later — so-named for the weight-saving oval cutouts in their steel center beams.
