SHIKO MUNAKATA, 1903-75, original Japanese woodblock print. "Fudo Myoo" or "Acala". Self published c. 1950. Excellent impression, overall very good condition, heavy bleed through with some spotting at top margin and typical light wrinkling of washi paper. Woodcut 7.5 x 14.2 inches, 19 x 36 cm. Sheet size 1.4 x 17.25 inches, 29 x 44 cm. Frame 18 x 23 inches, 46 x 58 cm. Woodblock is not in Munakata catalog raisonne and or possibly other publications. Commemorative woodblock executed by Shiko for "members" or "believers" of the Buddhist temple NISSEKI-JI. Google for this temple's wonderful stone-cut of Acala "wisdom king" from 11th or 12th century on its ground, from which Munakata takes much of the imagery for this woodcut. Edition size and seals not known to me. I do believe this to be original frame for print from several past observations, it is is excellent condition. I will sell print without frame if desired, print is loose, back of frame easily releases as intended. I have seen this print colored, this one b/w, please see pictures. One of the truly great artists of the 20th century. $1 to START.
