This rare painting is the fifth item we have been commissioned to auction from an estate collection owned by a direct descendent of Garcilaso Inca De La Vega's only son, Diego de Vargas. Please note the seller wishes to remaining anonymous and we are acting as their auction assistant. These pieces left Peru BEFORE the 1993 Peruvian law and other international treaties banning exportation of antiques and "National Treasures". For this reason it has not been registered as a "National Treasure" by the National Institute of Culture that was created by the 1993 Peruvian law. What this means is that the winning bidder will have sole title to the painting. This auction is private and your bidding identity will be protected by eBay. This wonderful 350+ year old painting of Saint Barbara was authenticated in Buenos Aires Argentina in 1999 by the current owners. This is why they will give the winning bidder 30 days to authenticate the age of this rare work with their own experts, offering an unconditional full bid refund guarantee. The age of the painting was confirmed by a study of the canvas it is on and the pigments used in the paint. This painting belonged to a series that was painted of Female Saints and Martyrs during the early 17th century in Cuzco. Most of them are in private collections or museums today. This is the first one to come up for auction on EBay. The artist used indigo and azurite pigments. In addition the gold you see on the borders and on the dress is not paint, but real gold leaf. The winning bidder will receive a copy of a 1999 article from the Stanford University archives describing the methods used in the dating of paintings from this series. The painting is not signed, but it is suspected that the painter was most probably a native Inca student of Bernardo Bitti who worked in Cuzco during the first years of the 17th century. This canvas is original and t has been no attempt to touch up the painting. It has been professionally cleaned and bees wax applied to preserve both the original paint and the canvas. T is a canvas border or fringe that was installed to assist the winning bidder in re-stretching and mounting the painting. This should only be done by a professional. The size of the original canvas is 4.5 feet by 5.5 feet,( exactly 56 inches by 65 inches). Do to the large size of the painting, the artist 350+ years ago, stitched together two pieces of canvas to arrive at the size needed for the painting. The line on the back-middle of the canvas the workman is holding, is that original stitch line. PLEASE NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS: CALL FOR SHIPPING ESTIMATES THAT VARY BY COUNTRY.
