T are Black Forest collectors whom demand a carving with age and history,I feel this is one for your review.T are 2 types of plaques ,the first is what we see as a norm from the 1860's to 1930 given the name Gaming or Hunters plaque, they are carved with dead game hanging. These were carved for decoration and gained interest during the hay days of Swiss carving export sales. Johann Fluck was most noted for his and his studio game /hunters plaques. The second is what I have listed ,it was known as a Trophy Plaque,it was used to display antlers which were taken from that years hunt. These plaques were used as a status symbol to the wealthy which wish others to know of t great hunting skills. This plaque is from the 1840 to 1850 ,I base this on the crude style of carved stag head, the style of decoration for plaque and Black Walnut that was use.Not just a thin slab but a large thick piece, which later could not be used do to supply and expense was to great after these years. This Trophy plaque is 32 inches without antlers Tall and with antlers 43 inches tall,24 inches wide. The plaque at one time had split and I am sure wooden dile repair was used but is solid excellent repair, the Black walnut carved leaf collar which also helps to determine age is missing a section at top behind head,ALL wooden diles ,which mount ears, antlers and horns to plaque are replaced as age took it's toll, nature of wood. Finally most of these were thought to be carved in Germany and hung in t hunting lodges, this one began it's life in Switzerland ,if you will note forehead, were skull cap was normally mounted. T is the Swiss "Edelweiss"we see in so many of the Swiss masters carvings.T is a treat for the educated to antlers, these are from a Huge Fallow deer which do not grow large in size.I wanted to give you a comparison of even an earlier 1750-1790 Trophy plaque which is in this collection ,it is Not Part of this auction but just used as guide.Note the thickness of the Black walnut used in earlier plaque, and then to the later after 1850 black walnut became a rich mans wood. The antlers on the earlier carving are Wood.My reserve is less then 1500.00-Thanks for taking the time! --PAYPAL PAYMENT IS DUE WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THIS AUCTION END!ONLY 1840-50 PLAQUE IS BEING SOLD IN THIS AUCTION.NO INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS.
