Museum Quality Cast Fossil Coelacanth "Lobe-finned" Fish
Coccoderma barvaricum This museum-quality cast was made from a splendid, well-preserved fossil lobe-finned fish called a coelacanth, hailing from the famous Solhnhofen Limestone in Germany. Coelcanths appeared over 300 million years ago and are members of the Crossopterygian group of fishes, thought by many paleontologists to have led into amphibians and all land vertebrates. For many years coelacanths were thought to have gone extinct along with the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago. However, in 1938 a living coelacanth was caught off the coast of South Africa, and quickly became celebrated as a "living fossil." Since then more specimens have been caught, including some from Madagascar and Indonesia, the latter possibly representing a second living species. The extinct species represented in this cast is Coccoderma barvaricum. Note that the hairline crack seen toward the tail is part of the original fossil, and not a defect in the cast. The cast is composed of high strength gypsum cement and was meticulously hand-painted to accurately duplicate the finest details of the original specimen. The cast is approximately 11 x 4 inches. It includes a wire hanger on the back, and a full identification label. This would make a great addition to any fossil collection a wonderful conversation piece, and a unique gift for any science and nature lover. Low starting bid and no reserve. U.S. and Canada bidders only please. Payment by PayPal required (due to eBay policy). Priority Mail shipping 8.00. Insurance optional for 1.75 extra. Thank you!
