Up for auction is an extremely Rare Opportunity to own an amazing Museum Quality Ancient hand made Very Rare Glazed Chinese Afterlife Funerary Mercury Pottery Storage Jar Vessel from the Geldermalsen Shipwreck, circa Song Dynasty. This is an Elongated rolled mouth clay jar is rising up from a narrow base to broad shoulders, it is reminiscent of the Meiping style of vase making. Many many hours of research went into this piece and I can say with some certainty that It was implied that this was a ceremonial piece that would have contained some kind of liquid in the burial of Chinese citizens for there use in the afterlife. It is a storage jar that would of contained water, wine, or possibly even mercury. The small 3/4 of an inch opening in the mouth area has a dark circular splash ring spreading out from it which looks to have been glazed at one point in time, though the sea water ate away at the sheen it would of originally had. The design is reminiscent of the Song Dynasty, however these kind of funerary objects started in the Qin Dynasty, Circa 220 B.C. and ended during the Ming Dynasty circa 1644 A.D. The Geldermalsen had pieces from Song to Qing Dynasties.
