VERY RARE, MUSEUM QUALITY, ANTIQUE UZBEK SILK, VELVET, and METAL THREAD EMBROIDERED CEREMONIAL HORSE COVER, Central Asia, Uzbekistan, very early 20th century (before 1920), and coming fresh to the market in quite good allover condition for the collector or decorator. The exact size, not including the red and yellow silk fringes, is: 4'-9" x 6'-0" (145 x 183 cm) at the widest dimensions. This fantastic antique ceremonial horse blanket textile artifact from Uzbekistan is comprised of a cotton or linen backing with a velvet panel, multi-colored silk, and gold and silver colored metal threads for the embroidered motifs in the field and border surround (see photos # 6, 7, and 8). There is a strip of silk ikat at the top edging on the reverse. Note the metal rings at the top whereby the weaving was used as a decorative wall hanging display (see photo # 11). The condition is very good for its age, but it shows wear to the purple velvet and a couple of slits in this material from age use in the past (see photo # 9). The sides and bottom end have been embellished with yellow and red silk fringes with one small area showing missing threads at the bottom (see photo # 10). There are a few areas where the metal threads show abrasions from use. I bought this textile relic from an equestrian horse lover who used it on her horse for parade shows. She told me that the item was used as a prop for the early Errol Flynn "Arabian Night's" movies in the 1920's, hence the age use areas. However, she had no documentation to support this claim as the item came to her from the estate of another woman who worked in the film industry back then. Under normal circumstances, in the ethnographic context within which this item was created, it would have been solely used as decoration and not for sitting upon. Notwithstanding the inherent blemishes that keep it from being in perfect condition, it is still in excellent displayable condition retaining all of its luster and glory. This lovely antique weaving will make a dramatic fine art statement as a decorative wall hanging in any home or office interior decor. A prize possession for the horse lover or antique textile collector.
