I hand make museum quality harpoons. These are real harpoons , new, but made to look old. My replicas are typical representations of the "irons" found in the Catalogue of The Whaling Museum, Old Dartmouth Historical Society in New Bedford, MA. The iron is a Killing Lance , " ..The lance consisted of an iron shank, 5-6 feet long, with a standard socket at one end for mounting to a pole. The blade of the lance was oval, or petal shaped, approximately five inches long and two inches wide, and it was razor sharp on all edges. It was designed to be withdrawn and used repeatedly. A short lance warp was tied around the lance shank foward of the socket, in the same manner as the line attached to a harpoon. This line passed back along the lance pole, was secured to it, and usually passed through a hole at the butt end of the pole to emerge at the center... Harpoons And Other Whalecraft, by Thomas G. Lytle The iron measures 57 1/4 inches from the tip to the end of the split socket. The iron is aged thru oxidation and then preserved as an artifact of old. Genuine Stockholm tarred hemp marline is used to serve the split socket and is secured with a whalers turk's head knot. The initials of the maker (S&P) is stamped in the Lance head, as was the custom. The pole is dense Alaskan Spruce and is over 100 years old. This pole is naturally distressed. The whale line is Genuine Hemp and is stopped to the pole four times using Genuine Stockholm tarred marline which has the pleasant odor of the old ships. Thus overall the Lance is 9 foot 9 inches long when mounted, but can be displayed in an area of a little over 5 feet. This whalecraft makes an excellent display of the American Whaling era. It is suitable for home, office, museum, and anyw a nautical theme is desired. The pictures are of this harpoon. Comments and questions appreciated! Thank you, Harpoonguy
