He grew up in Trenton, New Jersey. Basically a self-taught artist, Suydam began drawing at age four. His uncle had taken the Famous Artists Course, and when Suydam was in high school he discovered his uncle's workbooks from the course. The information in the books was valuable, but the real attraction for Arthur was discovering the greatness of illustrators Albert Dome and Norman Rockwell, whom he cites as major influences.Suydam was always a comic book fan. He came across the EC Comics early on, and devoured the work of Graham "Ghastly" Ingels. When the early Creepy magazines began to appear, Suydam once again found horror material to his liking. Those early covers served to cement Frank Frazetta's influence on Suydam. Arthur's first published work was a fan drawing that appeared on the Creepy letters page. This was also among the first places young Berni Wrightson's work appeared. When Suydam was in high school, he went to Warren's offices looking for work Jim Warren was impressed enough to hire the young artist, but when he found that Suydam was still in high school he told him to wait until he graduated. When Suydam came back in 1973, he found that t was a new editor on Creepy. He began making the rounds and was hired by Joe Orlando at DC Comics. Suydam began illustrating horror scripts to DC's House Of Secrets. Prior to this experience, Suydam had always written his own stories. He submitted some stories to DC, but was told they were "too adult" for the young audience DC was aiming for. It was not long before Suydam "outgrew" the mainstream comics.John Workman had become aware of Suydam's work when he was at DC. When Workman became art director at Heavy Metal, Suydam came around with ideas for his own stories. He developed a series, "Mugwog", to be run as a monthly feature. Although four installments of the feature have run, the monthlystatus was not forthcoming. Suydam was asked to design two characters for the Heavy Metal movie. Although they were not used in the film, the characters captured Suydam's imagination. He continued to develop them on his own, and "Cholly" and "Flytrap" were born. Suydam sold "Cholly and Flytrap" to Epic Illustrated, w they have appeared in a brilliant series of full-color adventures. They occupy a world deliberate ly left mysterious by Suydam. Inhabited by anthropomorphosised slugs and gargantuanly-obese humanoids, we are never certain whether this is a post-holocaust Earth or another world. This gives Suydam total freedom to release his unbridled imagination, and he takes full advantage of the opportunity. Cholly and Flytrap roam the wild regions of their world. T is more than a hint of anarchy to the pair. As Suydam states, "Sometimes guys from the civilized areas go out into the world to c...
