The mythical Griffin, half-lion, half-eagle, has fascinated man no end. From its roots in ancient Middle Eastern legends, this fantasy creature has appeared everyw, from ancient Egyptian statuary to British coats-of-arms; from the 19th-century painting "St. George and the Dragon" to Lewis Carroll's beloved "Alice in Wonderland. Of late, we've even seen him in one of Harry Potter's movies, "The Prisoner of Azkaban"! 's a "window" to the magical world of this mythical beast -- a beguiling pair of earrings featuring the griffin protecting her treasured gemstone eggs. Unmarked, but t's characteristics in these earrings that remind me of Joseff of Hollywood: its age, depicting a detailed Art Nouveau style, its rich Russian goldplating, even the domed and ridged base that so resembles a few pieces I have owned and a few that I've seen online. The griffin is a protector, a symbol of vigilance and strength; it is often depicted guarding a treasure trove. Our griffins, with their eagle heads cast down and wings way up, and their sinewy lion's bodies curled as if ready to pounce, are doing just that.
