An interesting letter written in French signed "Napoleon" and dated Au Cour (at the Court) September 29 1826. The date 1826 would suggest that the writer was Napoleon III but examples of his signature shown on the internet do not correspond. He would also have been only 18 years old at the time whereas the writing appears to be more mature. If the date was interpreted as 1896 there do not appear to be any "Napoleons" at that time as Napoleon IV had died earlier. I would be grateful for any input or theories anyone might suggest particularly as a translation of the text might cast further light on the writer or the period. This item was part of a large collection of letters purchased at Bonhams and Butterfields in Los Angeles in 2004 which had been part of a Paris autograph dealers' collection .
