Indian Village Trading is owned and operated by Jay and Reba Yellowhorse, Navajos. Because we are Navajo we have the opportunity to share with you our culture and knowledge about each piece we sell. The word Kachina often makes us think of masked figures dancing on ancient mesas. Kachinas were said to live on top of mesas, this kachina is a god that is said to live on the third sacred mesa. He is said to only appear during the winter dances and the soyal ceremony. He represents the fertility of mankind, as well as moisture of rain and snow. This kachina comes from the hopi tribe, although the maker is Navajo his wife and children are hopi. The base has been signed by the maker, E. Charley who has also signed the name of the doll above his name. This doll stands 14 inches tall, the wood work from head to toe is amazing! A thick wooden base under his feet is 2cm thick, 3in wide base. Delicately painted and rabbit fur for moccasins cover his feet 2 in x ¾ in. Sturdy wooden legs are also hand painted and hand carved measuring about 5 inches long. You have to see this doll to appreciate the work and beauty. Leather is used for his traditional costume measuring about 4 inches from waist to knees. The design is a rug design that is traditionally used in many Native American items. For a belt leather is again used and decorated with little shells all the way around his waist. The chest of this kachina has been hand painted with turquoise (water) and yellow(corn pollen). The head piece of the kachina has wonderful detail with rain clouds and thunder bolts on his cheeks. The total measurement of the head piece is 5 inches top to bottom and 3 ½ inches ear to ear.
