is an authentic and traditional HOPI HU or TUNGWUP Kachina from the 1955-1965 range, and he is in excellent condition. " The THE HU KACHINAS APPEAR BEFORE THE ACTUAL BEAN DANCE PARADE TO INITIATE THE CHILDREN INTO THE KACHINA CULT. THEY ALWAYS COME AS A PAIR AND ACCOMPANY THE CROW MOTHER WHO HOLDS THEIR WHIPS FOR THEM. MANY KACHINAS MAY RECEIVE THE NAME OF A WHIPPER BECAUSE AS GUARDS THEY CARRY WHIPS OR BECAUSE THEY WHIP FOR RHEUMATISM. HOWEVER, THESE ARE THE ONLY KACHINAS WHO WHIP FOR INITIATION. AS EACH CHILD IS BROUGHT FORWARD TO STAND BEFORE THEM THEY STRIKE FOUR SOLID BLOWS ACROSS THEIR BACKS WITH THE YUCCA WHIPS, TAKING TURNS AT THE TASK UNTIL ALL HAVE RECEIVED THE TREATMENT. WHEN THE CHORE IS COMPLETED THEY WHIP EACH OTHER AND THEN THE CROW MOTHER BEFORE DISAPPERAING FROM THE KIVA. THIS KACHINA DOES NOT APPEAR VERY OFTEN AS A DOLL...." ( see B. wright, 1977 Pg. 36). The Kachinas are spirits who live in the San Francisco Peaks (an "extinct" volcano) near Flagstaff, Arizona, they come down at certain times of the year to interact in their various forms with the Hopi People on the three ancient Mesa Pueblos. You can visit the Hopi Mesas to see them dance in their human form, t is even a hotel t now! I used to live at the Grand Canyon SR Village in the early 1970's and visited the Hopi Mesas often as a teenager...things have changed
