We are located along historic Route 66, Lupton, AZ 1-40 Exit 359 Wedding vaseWhen I was a little girl I attended my first native American wedding ceremony with my grandma. Everyone was going inside a very old Hogan. My grandma said that when we go inside I was to sit still, watch, and be quiet, it was very important, I of course just wanted to stay outside and play. When we got inside I seen two people sitting in the middle of the room, in front of them four people. The four people were talking to the couple in the middle, I wanted to ask what they were saying but I knew I needed to stay quiet. The couple in the middle took a vase with two spouts and a handle connecting the spouts and drank from it. The bride drank from one side turned it and gave it to the groom. After this was done everyone went outside, I tried to ask my grandma what they just did, she would only tell me that I was too young to understand. I asked my mother and she said the same, so I waited. Years went by and I forgot about asking. Two days before my wedding my grandmother brought me a gift it was a wedding vase, with two spouts and a handle connecting the spouts, reminding me of what I had seen years before. My grandmother began telling me the significance of the vase:When the man and the woman sitting in the middle of the Hogan were getting advise form the people in front of them, their parents. The parents were telling them how to have a good, successful marriage. When the couple took the vase and drank from it, they were drinking water blessed by a medicine man. The two spouts were symbols of two people the handle in the middle was a symbol of joining them together to make them one, much like today's unity candles. This story was told by a local native American who wishes to remain anonymous, but gave permission to us to use her story. Marriage is a time of deep emotion and great trust in the future. The wedding vase, so symbolic of everything marriage stands for.
