ONE Spirit, , is proud to auction this handmade, new and original, Oglala-Lakota elk hide drum with maple wood shell, and cherry wood drum stick. Kelly Looking Horse, a full-blood Oglala-Lakota, from the Wakpamni Lake Community of Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, and an accomplished Lakota artisan, is the maker of this drum. Kelly's drums are high quality instruments and create a beautiful traditional sound. The back of this drum is intricately hand wound with sinew. The elk hide is stretched with great expertise around the maple frame. Those who have heard Kelly sing and play his drums know why the drum is considered the lifeblood of the Lakota Nation. "This bear drum is done in the 4 Lakota colors. Traditionally bears were considered wakan, (sacred and mysterious), patrons of wisdom and medicine," Kelly Looking Horse. Kelly Looking Horse is the Cultural Director of ReMember, an organization on Pine Ridge Reservation bringing mission groups to the Reservation for work-vacations with an emphasis on cultural exchange. Kelly's drums are the focal point of that exchange. Kelly has signed and inscribed the inside of this drum: Kelly Looking Horse Oglala-Lakota Wakpamni Lake Pine Ridge, S.D.
