One of the least known aspects of Custer's Last Stand is that of the Arikara Army Indian Scouts with Custer. When they are mentioned at all, it is usually in the context of their warning Custer not to attack ...there were too many Warriors for him. This is misleading because not all desired not to attack ...not to mention the Crow Indian Scouts who were urging him to attack. Some writers even state the Arikaras even deserted Custer and this caused his defeat. Custer and Last Stand scholar, Dr. John S. Gray has devoted himself to a study of the role of these Scouts at the Battle and comes up with a totally different picture. The Arikaras were enemies of the Sioux and Cheyenne, and they knew the land well. They were important during the march to the Little Big Horn, and were assigned specific duties the day of the Cavalry attack. Their role was not only carried out, but because of their efforts, according to Warrior testimony, Custer was initially winning the Battle and the hostiles were in preparation for a retreat. It was only after Major Reno began his panic retreat that the Arikaras gave up the battle. Gray goes into nice detail in covering all of this. An especially valuable resource is his listing of the names of all of these Scouts ...both Indian and Army names. A good scholarly study of this part of the Battle. Volume 2 "Two Custer Scouts: Bloody Knife & California Joe" by Lisle Reedstrom ... This is by historian and artist Lisle Reedstrom and deals with two of Custer's favorite Scouts. California Joe was a Scout on the Lower Plains and instrumental in the Washita fight; Bloody Knife was the main Scout on the Northern Plains. Both men were characters of the type found only on the frontier West ...and we will never see their likes again. At one stage, both were appointed Chief of Scouts ...and both would be fired by Custer for getting drunk to celebrate. Bloody Knife only lasted a day in the position, as he got drunk and took his rifle and began firing at people on a riverboat on the Missouri beside the fort. California Joe lasted a few days longer ...mainly due to the fact that no one could find him for him to be fired. California Joe was well respected on the Plains and taught the Army many tricks on Warrior fighting. Bloody Knife was raised among the Sioux and treated badly by them because of his mixed blood. Bloody Knife and Custer grew very close and were like brothers ...his sudden killing and its manner in no small way led to defeat at the Little Big Horn. Reedstrom traces the lives of both men and their time with the Seventh Cavalry. Great history and reading. Volume 3 "Indians at Greasy Grass" ... A fatal weakness of most Custer's Last Stand books is the writers fail to include stories of the Battle as seen by the Indian Warriors. If they do, it is just that they agree with the writer's scenario. Authors state that the Warrior narratives are too confusing, etc. In reality, it is just the opposite, and writers are really too lazy to put many of these first-hand accounts into their proper perspective. The Battle was , in reality, fought over a four mile area and the major action was within a half mile ...with a number of "last stands" by the soldiers, and not just Custer Hill.
