Rare and unique is what I would call this War Club. I've seen quite a few, but this is the first one I've seen that the entire stone is covered in rawhide! This makes good sense; if the stone happened to break in battle, the hide cover would keep it from falling apart. This club was aquired from the large estate sale collection recently. It dates to the mid to late 1800's. The entire club, including the stone and handle are wrapped in rawhide and then stitched with sinew. It is decorated with two sections of red and black beads, each section is about 2.25 inches long. It also has 4 broadheaded brass tacks and 5 regular brass tacks for additional decoration. If t were any feathers or other drops, they are long gone. The head is 6.5 inches long, and 2.5 inches wide. The overall length is 25.25 inches. The handle is about 5/8" to 3/4" thick over the length. and the weight is 1 lb. 2 oz. The previous owner did almost all of her collecting in the central New Mexico area, so I would guess that this club could be Mescalero Apache. The stone is very secure and all the stitching is tight. The beads are also in excellent condition. This club could probably go into battle today! It is museum quality.
