NAUTILUS, PEARL CENTER CUT TWO MATCHING PARTS Listing . One 3 to 3 7/8 Tiger Nautilus Center cut, priced at $10.95. Description. The Tiger Nautilus is the only true natural Nautilus shell. The Pearl Nautilus is a Tiger Nautilus highly polished down to the nacre or "mother of pearl" inner shell. The center cut Tiger Nautilus allows you to see the growth compartments inside the shell. The Nautilus animal lived in each compartment as it grew. These compartments were filled with gas which allowed the Nautilus to float easier and it became known as a free swimmer as it drifted with the ocean currents. Most Tiger Nautilus' today are confined to the Indo-Pacific region ranging from the Indian Ocean to north of the Philippine islands. The Tiger Nautilus are members of the Cephalopod family of shells. These are light weight shells with a creamy background decorated with tiger like stripes; which do not cover the entire shell. The Tiger Center cut has been bisected with a high speed instrument. This center cut reveals compartments on one side of the inner shell and the nacre on the other. Listing Picture . The picture shows the shell compartments, "the mother of pearl", the tiger stripes and the shape well. It does not show the beak. The beak is different with each Nautilus shell. It is the area of the shell near the opening, w the animal last lived. The shell at the beak is discolored (blackish/purple).
