Charming mud toy of Navajo woman holding a watermelon by Navajo folk artist Rose Herbert. The piece is in excellent condition and measures a 3 1/2" tall and 4" long. This is a special item Rose made for me and can't be found in galleries. Rose is the cousin of well-known Navajo folk artists Elsie Benally and Jessie Malone, and the niece of Dan Hot. Her toys are shaped by hand from native clay and then dried in the sun. Rose then paints each piece and adds other features such as "hair", for which she uses sheep wool of various natural colors. I am an avid Navajo folk art collector and purchased this piece directly from Rose last year at her home near Sweetwater, Arizona. Mud toys are fragile pieces of art: packaging will be done with great care.
