Airship and Aviation Collectibles Commemorative Cover Navy Mourns Loss of USS Macon - U.S.S. Pennsylvania Post Mark This is a nice commemorative cover with a printed cachet. The cachet states "The Navy Mourns The Loss of the U.S.S. Macon On The Second Anniversary of her Christening". It also includes the information that the airship crashed at sea off Point Sur, California on February 12, 1935. The cover is postmarked for the U.S.S. Pennsylvania on March 11, 1935, just one month after the Macon's loss. T is also a stamped cachet with the words "Fleet Flagship" and another small printed cachet in a rectangular box design that has the words "U.S.S. Pennsylvania". The cover is in very nice condition with very slight corner rounding that is hardly noticeable. The post mark, cachets and signatures are clear and well formed. The cover is made more distinctive by bearing the signatures of three individuals who played a role in the history of American lighter than air craft. The signatures were collected at a later date than that of the cover. William A. Cody headed up the heavier than air (HTA) Units on U.S.S. Akron and Macon. Scott E. Peck flew blimps in WW1 and was a navigator on the U.S.S. Macon. D. Ward Harrigan was the first HTA pilot assigned to the hook-on unit of the U.S.S. Akron and helped to develop the hook-on technique.
