This listing is for an EARLY 1942 Friez US Navy ships barometer with Bakelite case and gold-silvered dial.Bakelite was used because brass was required for more critical applications, not because it was cheap to use,(most definitely NOT) nor was it easy to machine,(actually much more difficult), but because we needed bullet casings! If you look closely at it, you will see bits of metal, rags and tires incorporated whithin it,the result of WWII "recycling" drives.Probably made around May to June 1942, as evidenced by the unreinforced mount holes,(these were brass inserts after June,1942) and low serial number,(even Destroyer escorts had 6 or more barometers on board, so FRIEZ made a lot of barometers, sadly few remain). Dial has a slight yellow tone,(Friez made a VARIETY of different shades, don't know why, suspect unreliable metal supplies of brass for dials), and would have been "paired" with a CHELSEA ships clock at the time,as Chelsea DID NOT make ships barometers for the US NAVY during WWII. Perfect bakelite case still has red Naval Observatory acceptance stamp on back, signifying it passed the rigorous Naval Observatory test requirements for accuracy. Movement is twin NI SPAN capsules, and is fully jewelled, typical of the instruments made by the"Great Generation" that pursued WWII until winning it.4 1/2" diaL,GRADUATED IN INCHES read more
