German National Flag, WWII. Cotton, 1.5 by 10 meters. All red with white circle and swastika sewn on both sides. Incredible provenance! This flag flew, with another identical to it (now lost), from the BishopÃ,Â's Palace in Salzburg, Austria, which was commandeered by the Gestapo for use as their headquarters between the Anschluss in 1938 and the end of the war in 1945. After the war, with a shortage of cloth and other necessary materials, the flag was folded in such a way as to hide the swastika, revealing only red cloth, and used as an altar cloth in the Salzburg Cathedral. It wasnÃ,Â't discovered until it was sent out for cleaning in the 1970's, at which time a friend of the late Salzburg Verger, offered to trade a genuine altar cloth for the flag. The Church was only too happy to disassociate itself from this grim reminder of the Nazi Occupation and agreed to the trade. He later brought the flag to the United States when he immigrated in 1991. Very good condition, except for one small tear (see photo). This flag is huge and very difficult to photograph in its entirety. The use of the BishopÃ,Â's Palace as Gestapo Headquarters is well documented and this exact flag is pictured in a German language book about Salzburg in WWII. Statement included from the gentleman who acquired it from Salzburg Cathedral, describing the history. Contact seller for additional details.
