"Bulgaria" (I believe that is her identity.) is an approximately 9" stuffed cloth international doll with floppy arms, pin jointed thighs, and mitten shaped hands with extended thumbs and stitched fingers that was manufactured by the Near East Foundation circa the 1930's-1940's. She is similar to the Near Industries dolls of Athens, Greece, which were handmade by local artisans under the auspices of the Near East Foundation to help refugees in the Balkans. They were often sold through Kimport Dolls. Bulgaria retains her "Near East Foundation 16 Iv. Vazoff str., Sofia" label beneath her apron. She is authentically dressed in provincial costuming sewn from fine fabrics. Her kerchief is probably missing and her sandals have split at their leather strap. Please notice the staining along the feet of her stockings. Her head is unusual as it is modeled from composition and then hand painted with robust coloring. It suffers areas of scuffing, soil, and a pinhole beneath her chin. Her hair is fashioned into a single braid from brown mohair. Bulgaria 's outfit sustains light dust and discoloration from age and storage. The yarn detailing on the back lower edge of her black skirt is deteriorating. In her detailed costuming, she remains a lovely tribute to an earlier culture that is fast fading. Great costuming!PLEASE study the photos carefully read more
