This is a NEAR MINT circa 1930s Pepsi-Cola celluloid advertising sign. The adverting slogan, "A Nickle Drink-Worth A Dime" was used from approximately 1933 to 1939, when Pepsi deliberately priced a 12 ounce drink (twice the size of compeditors drinks) for 5 cents. Wikipedia states, " During the GreatDepression, Pepsi gained popularity following the introduction in 1936 of a12-ounce bottle. Initially priced at 10 cents, sales were slow, but when the price was slashed to five cents, sales increased substantially. With a radio advertising campaign featuring the jingle "Pepsi-Cola hits the spot / Twelve full ounces, that's a lot / Twice as much for a nickel, too / Pepsi-Cola is the drink for you," arranged in such a way that the jingle never ends . Pepsi encouraged price-watching consumers to switch, obliquely referring to the Coca-Cola standard of six ounces per bottle for the price of five cents (a nickel), instead of the 12 ounces Pepsi sold at the same price. Coming at a time of economic crisis, the campaign succeeded in boosting Pepsi's status. From 1936 to 1938, Pepsi-Cola's profits doubled." This sign has NEVER been displayed as originally intended. It is NEW OLD STOCK (NOS) from a Pepsi warehouse. It was purchased from a former Pepsi bottling company owner 22 years ago. Since them it has been kept out of direct light, unhandled and in a climate controlled environment. It measures 12 1/4" high x 5 1/4" wide. There are some slight imperfections in the piece, which is normal for a 70+ year old piece, since celluloid is known to be flammable, fragile and prone to deterioration. I have shown close-ups of any imperfections. The original screws and envelope are still attached to and unopened on the back of the sign. This is an extremely rare and valuable piece, worthy of any serious advertising collection. Please contact me with any questions. Payment should be made within three (3) days of auction end.
