6th plate daguerreotype portrait of a handsome gentleman, with worn half leattte case. This plate was cleaned and resealed with new glass by a previous owner in 1998. It has some minimal mat abrasions, esp. above the head. Sharp focus, nice tonality. Beautiful whites! Information about daguerreotypes: Daguerreotypes are the earliest types of photographs produced in the United States on a large-scale commercial basis. The wonderful technique was invented by Daguerre in 1839, allowing images to be captured onto the silvered surface of copper plates. Each image is unique, since t are no "negatives;" the plate itself was loaded into the camera obscura for the typically long exposure times needed to capture these beautiful portraits of our mid 19 th century ancestors (circa 1839-1860). After development in a dark room, these treasures were sealed behind glass, and presented in small decorative cases that have lasted well to this day. With much more durability and beauty than paper photos, these are highly collectible. Most images were taken BEFORE the Civil War! Visit: / Save on shipping: purchase more than one item!
