Here's a rare original N B (Nelson Bass) signed ovoid pottery jug from Lincoln County, North Carolina....this green alkaline ash glaze stoneware jug was made in the 1870s or 1880s by Nelson Bass in Vale, NC. It is marked N B on top of the applied strap handle. Hand thrown on a potter's wheel...round ovoid shape with crudely applied strap handle.....pronounced ring lip....green streaked alkaline glaze drips down around the jug.....some reddish color showing through....grey colored natural chips on bottom from when the glaze stuck to whatever it was sitting on. White speckles on surface of the glaze 11"tall x 5 1/2"across bottom.....Excellent condition with no cracks. A couple small shallow chips on the surface of lip. Some natural in-the-making chips on very bottom surface from where the glaze stuck. Some normal surface wear and light scratches. The NB stands for Nelson Bass who lived from 1846-1918. His pottery was located in Vale, Lincoln County, North Carolina (which I believe is in the famous Catawba Valley?). Bass probably made this jug himself in the 1870s. It is a beautiful piece of North Carolina alkaline ash glazed stoneware with streaky green glaze. THIS IS A 7 DAY AUCTION.
